Search my addressVictoria is standardising household waste into a four-stream system: a red lid bin for general waste, yellow for mixed recycling, lime green for food and garden organics (FOGO), and purple for glass. Councils are rolling the new streams out on their own timelines, so neighbouring councils can be at very different stages. Most metropolitan councils collect general waste weekly and alternate recycling and organics fortnightly.
Victoria also runs a container deposit scheme, CDS Vic, which refunds 10 cents for most drink bottles, cans and cartons returned to a refund point. Anything you return for a refund does not need to go in the yellow bin.
Hard rubbish is handled council by council. Some Victorian councils run scheduled annual collections, others use a booking system with a set number of free collections per year. Check your council page below for its official site.
