Public holiday bin collection: does your bin day move?

Public holidays throw bin schedules off every year. Whether your collection moves forward a day or is delayed to the weekend depends entirely on your council.

The short answer

Most Australian councils shift your bin collection by one day when a public holiday falls on or before your normal collection day in that week. However, there is no national standard. Some councils do not change collection days at all during public holidays.

You need to check your specific council's policy. The fastest way is to use the live address lookup on Bin Night Tonight.

Christmas and Boxing Day (25 and 26 December)

The biggest disruption of the year. Both days are public holidays, meaning collections in the week of Christmas are commonly shifted by two days. Many councils publish a special Christmas collection schedule. Check yours before Christmas week.

Easter (Good Friday and Easter Monday)

Two public holidays across Friday and Monday, potentially affecting the whole week. Many councils announce Easter schedules in advance.

Australia Day (26 January)

A single Monday holiday. Most affected councils shift that week's collections by one day. If your bin day is Monday, it typically moves to Tuesday.

What if my bin wasn't collected?

Leave the bin out until it is collected. Collection trucks often run late on days following public holidays. If the bin has not been collected by the next day, contact your council to report a missed collection.
